The African Queen [VHS]Price : $14.98 AverageRating : 4.5 Reviews : 79
The 1951 John Huston classic, set in Africa during World War I, garnered Humphrey Bogart an Oscar for his role as a hard-drinking riverboat captain in Africa, who provides passage for a Christian missionary spinster (Katharine Hepburn). Taking an instant, mutual dislike to one another, the two endure rough waters, the presence of German soldiers, and their own bickering to finally fall into one another’s arms. This is classic Huston material–part adventure, part quest–but this time with a pair of characters who’d all but given up on happiness. Bogart (a longtime collaborator with Huston on such classics as The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo) and Hepburn have never been better, and support from frequent Huston crony Robert Morley (Beat the Devil, also featuring Bogart)

Mary, Queen of Scots [VHS]Price : $14.98 AverageRating : 4.5 Reviews : 100
As costume dramas go, this is a passionate and feisty one, keyed by the ever-luminous Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and the sharp-edged Glenda Jackson as her jealous cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (who knew a thing or two about palace intrigue). Elizabeth, whose own reign is shaky (given a strong Catholic presence in her country), is nervous about her Catholic cousin–and made more so by Mary’s seeming inability to appreciate the political niceties of the period. There are many remarkable things about the documentary 4 Little Girls. Spike Lee’s striking, beautifully realized film is a cinematic lesson of what kind of material is better suited to the documentary format. Except for four quick glimpses of black-and-white autopsy photos, the picture stays clear from the bombing. Lee remains with the faces, the girls’ friends, families, and the historic figures of the era. They’ve all grown up since the bombing but their memories haven’t faded. The vital facts of the case are certainly here: the troubled history of Birmingham, the court proceedings, friends’ last run-ins with the girls. What touches us deeper though are those
